BRAC is an international charity based in Bangladesh. It is one of the largest development organizations in the world today. Sir Fazle Hasan Abed established this organization in 1972 after the independence of Bangladesh. Apart from 64 districts of Bangladesh, it has operations in 13 countries in Asia, Africa and America. According to BRAC's claim, it currently employs around 1 lakh workers and 70% of them are women. 126_million_people are covered by BRAC's services. BRAC, through a social enterprise, works on a variety of projects including self-funded dairy, food, agriculture, cattle ranching and handicrafts.
BRAC was earlier known as Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee. It was originally formed to help repatriate refugees who were out of Bangladesh as a result of the independence war. In its beginning, Fazle Hasan Abed started working as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation project in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj district. As part of this relief effort, around 14,000 houses destroyed during the war were rebuilt. Besides this, hundreds of fishing boats were rebuilt. As per BRAC's claim, these developmental works were completed in just nine months. In addition, some hospitals were also opened with various necessary services.
